DEDUCE: Data-Driven and User-Centered Content Moderation
DEDUCE investigates how online platforms can move from intuition-driven moderation toward data-driven and transparent governance of online content. The project develops computational methods and analytical tools to estimate and anticipate the effects of moderation interventions before they are deployed, enabling moderators to plan and evaluate their actions in a more systematic way. By combining large-scale analysis of public platform data with machine learning and generative AI techniques, DEDUCE studies how moderation decisions shape online conversations and information flows. The project also examines issues of fairness, bias, and regulatory compliance, including how platforms implement moderation policies under frameworks such as the Digital Services Act. By making moderation more measurable, predictable, and accountable, DEDUCE aims to lay the foundations for a new generation of evidence-based moderation strategies.
PIANO: Personalized Interventions Against Online Toxicity
PIANO explores how online moderation can move beyond generic “one-size-fits-all” approaches by designing personalized interventions against toxic online behavior. Drawing on insights from psychology together with machine learning and artificial intelligence, the project studies how individual characteristics—such as personality traits and behavioral patterns—shape users’ reactions to moderation actions. By modeling these differences, PIANO develops methods to craft tailored moderation messages and interventions that are more likely to reduce toxic behavior while preserving constructive online dialogue. Through experiments and large-scale analyses of social media data, the project seeks to understand when and why moderation works, and how it can be adapted to the people it targets. The ultimate goal is to build a scientific foundation for user-centered moderation strategies that foster healthier and more inclusive online communities.
